MOVIE OF THE WEEK for 4/25: Tokyo Gore Police
Tokyo Gore Police is unapologetically an exploitation film. It's a revenge story full of brutal, over-the-top violence, sex, and a sexy female heroine. It has outrageousness like mutants whose wounds regenerate as deadly weapons, a gimp with sword limbs, and an honest-to-god gatling gun that shoots hands. Unfortunately it goes a bit too far, and too long. The sex is not titillating - it's mixed with the violence in a grotesque way that seems intended more to shock than to make any commentary. The absurdity of the setting seems to escalate over the course of the film to the point where it's no longer amusing but just ridiculous. And it's about 20 minutes too long, often using two scenes when just one would do.
So I can't say that I particularly enjoyed Tokyo Gore Police, but maybe some of you did. What was it you found to like in this film, and what am I missing?
OUR NEXT MOVIE OF THE WEEK for 5/2: Persona
Ingmar Bergman's stunning masterwork Persona is our next Movie of the Week, and I'm pretty excited about this one guys. Beautiful black and white cinematography and a script and actors to live up to it. Truly an exceptional film. Persona is available on Hulu Plus and for rent on Amazon Instant Video, though it is not free for Prime members.
NEXT PICTURE SHOW PODCAST for 4/26: Assault on Precinct 13
John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 is the first film in this week's Next Picture Show pairing. We'll have a post up on Wednesday for us to discuss it. Assault on Precinct 13 is available for rent on Amazon Instant Video, though it is not free for prime members.
