MOVIE OF THE WEEK: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World This week our Movie is Edgar Wright's adaptation of the Bryan Lee O'Malley graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Its bright video game aesthetic, clever editing, and fantastically integrated visual effects turned Toronto into some crazy wonderland built for us kids of the Nintendo era, and also tell an exciting and touching story about an immature man-child growing up a little bit.
Wright and O'Malley worked closely together during the production of this film, which started long before O'Malley had finished his work or even decided on an ending. As a result, the film closely matches the graphic novel while still remaining its own thing. The commentary track is full of Wright and O'Malley talking about who stole what from who and who came up with what and how they frequently aren't even sure anymore where credit belongs. It's probably because of this collaboration that the characters and the world feel so complete and lived in and the writing feels so sharp. What is your favorite aspect of the film? What other adaptations - if any - work as well for you as this one?
