On August 1, 1969 a letter arrived at three San Francisco newspapers, and a legend was born. The Zodiac Killer claimed to have taken the lives of over 30 people before his letters stopped (though only 7 can be confirmed), and his desire for publicity gripped the nation. It also drew the attention of a 6-year-old boy named David Fincher, who would go on to make a movie about the Zodiac Killer that would be not only one of his best, but one of the best period. And it's our Movie of the Week. Shot by the late, great Harris Savides and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, a pre-Iron Man Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and a rogue's gallery of great character actors, Zodiac takes a precise and detail-oriented look at the hunt for a killer and the obsession that drives and threatens to destroy his seekers.
David Fincher made his name with another serial killer film, Se7en, and yet I don't think that film - great as it is - can stand up to the real-life drama presented by Zodiac. What is it that makes Zodiac stand out for you? Is it Savides' photography? The High and Low-like procedural detail? The performances? Is there a point where Fincher altered the truth for his narrative that sticks in your craw?
OUR NEXT MOVIE OF THE WEEK for 9/28: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World In yet another heartbreaker for our poor friend Glorbes, A Matter of Life and Death just barely missed out yet again. I swear we'll get to it one day! In the meantime, we'll be covering the best video game movie ever made.
