This week we're talking about a movie known more for who shot it than who directed it. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful films ever made, and that beauty is to the credit of the magnificent (and yet still somehow Oscar-less) Roger Deakins. It's also one of his favorite films that he's shot, and for good reason. Writer/director Andrew Dominik's adaptation of the Ron Hansen novel feels almost dreamlike at times, inspired by the tranquil narration and the way Deakins occasionally lets the edges of the frame go out of focus. Pitt and Affleck turn in stellar performances as the title characters engage with issues of masculinity and trust and it's all so compelling it's easy to forget the film runs over 2.5 hours. What is your favorite image from this film?
OUR NEXT MOVIE OF THE WEEK for 9/21: Zodiac Our next Movie of the Week will be David Fincher's masterpiece, also from the stellar year of 2007. I'm personally pretty excited for this one because Fincher is one of my favorites and I've been looking for an opportunity to give this one a rewatch. The theatrical cut of Zodiac is available for streaming on Amazon Instant Video, but is not free for Prime members.
