MOVIE OF THE WEEK for 9/07: His Girl Friday This week our chosen movie is the 1940 classic His Girl Friday from Howard Hawks, starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Grant plays a newspaper editor in New York and Russell his ex-wife who is about to go up to Albany to get remarried, quitting the business. Grant won't stand for either of those things, and hijinks ensue. His Girl Friday is definitely a writer's movie; the dialog crackles with energy and humor and you could get almost as much out of the film without the video.
But what struck me is that when I got to the ending, I found it depressing. I realized that beneath all the screwball humor I had just seen a movie about the way addictions destroy peoples' lives and alienate them from the people who care about them. Did any of you also get this feeling on your first watch of the film?
OUR NEXT MOVIE OF THE WEEK for 9/14: The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford After a remarkably close 3-way race all weekend, this film eked out a victory by a single vote. It is available for streaming on Amazon Instant Video, but is not free for Prime Members.
