Our Movie of the Week this week is Jean-Pierre Melville's magnificent Le Samouraï, a taut film about a contract killer who is meticulous in his planning and attention to detail. Melville opens his film with a fictional quote "There is no solitude greater than that of the samurai unless it be that of a tiger in the jungle... perhaps..." My question for all of you is, is Melville right? Further, what is it that makes Le Samouraï belong in the same genre as films actually set during the samurai period in Japan?
